These violent delights chloe gong7/6/2023 Author Chloe Gong based the story on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. If this story sounds familiar, that’s because it is. But when a mysterious and deathly pandemic takes Shanghai by surprise, they choose to set aside their differences in order to save their beloved city. Though their families have warred for decades, Juliette and Roma were lovers until a painful rift tore them apart years ago. Then there’s Roma, son of the rival gang, the White Flowers. There’s Juliette, returned from abroad to reclaim her place as eventual leader of the Scarlet Gang (a criminal enterprise run by her family). This buzzy YA novel set in 1920s-era Shanghai is actually about two heroes. When I first picked up this book I thought, this is wild, and then I couldn’t put it down for 3 days. The stories and the worlds can vary widely-from The Lord of the Rings-style epics to dragons fighting in the sky-but each time, without fail, you’ll find a classic tale of a young, untested hero fighting forces of evil and maybe finding love along the way. I’ve always been the kind of person who roots for the underdog, which is one reason why I love young adult fantasy books so much.

Legend of pradeep mathew7/6/2023 It's a story about many stories: friendships, rivalries, nationhood, the undesirability of old age, the quantification of genius and other "unknowables", like how much love do you need in a lifetime, and is sport really greater than life? It is incredibly funny, and while it does occasionally meander with the laboriousness of a test match, the heart of this expansive novel isn't just about cricket. It also features a midget, a man accused of paedophilia, match-fixers, terrorists, dodgy government officials, an ambidextrous spin-bowler and more than you will ever need to know about cricket.įor those readers who think of nocturnal insects that chirp when you think "cricket", have no fear this book could still work for you. Mohandas karamchand gandhi7/5/2023 “For the present, I only want to say that I am not at all sorry for what I have done the rest I will explain in court,” Godse told a reporter. Godse was quickly captured by the crowd and arrested. His face turned pale, his white shawl of Australian wool was turning crimson with blood. The Mahatma was slumped on the ground, his head resting in the laps of both girls. “Then he slowly sank to the ground, palms joined still, possibly in a final ultimate act of ahimsa. He was heard to gasp, ‘He Ram, He Ram’ (‘Oh God, Oh God’),” the foundation writes. "As the third shot was fired Gandhi was still standing, his palms still joined. He was pronounced dead soon after.Īccording to the Gandhi Research Foundation, a crowd of several hundred, including an estimated 20 plain-clothes policemen, had gathered to join the leader in prayer. It was there that Godse shot the leader three times in the abdomen and chest at point-blank range as Gandhi’s granddaughters, often referred to as his “walking sticks,” stood at his side. Imploring peace between Hindus and Muslims, Gandhi traveled to New Delhi, participating in fasting vigils and prayer meetings.
